Is there any way to make, or train, a cat to be nicer?

Or is it just a lost cause. My cat is seven, and she's always been a biter. You pet her a couple times and she just munches into your hand. Cat do have love bites, and I'm just thinking that's her love bite.. considering she wants the attention.
