What is the best material for kitchen countertops?

I am looking for a balance between looks, low maintenance, and price. I've heard that natural stone like granite is very high maintenance, and a little pricey. I was considering a synthetic like silestone or corian. I welcome all suggestions and ideas on this topic. I want to get new countertops soon, but I am afraid of spending a lot of money and not being happy with the result. Thank you.
